No picture or text can tell you about me or my neighborhood , because despite the bad things drug dealers, crack heads, abandon and homes ,we are still a community. If you watch the news on my neighborhood they are more likely to show the bad things but my neighborhood means is more than just that .Church goers every other Saturday have clothes give aways to the public for free. Some times they provide snacks for the little kids and food for the family as well. Churches also give out canned goods to those who need it.The Pal ,a program that mentors kids ,provide many trips basket ball tournaments and other activities. These trips are not things like to the zoo , but more like to Disney during the summer and Six Flags. The Pal keep many kids out of trouble and jail by giving them some thing good to look forward too. Also in my neighborhood there is a dance group formed by boys from the shelter , they dance at different events and raise legal money for them to travel and perform. All of these great things would never be shown in a text or in pictures ,to me the only thing media is worried about is showing and writing Black African Americans as being worthless and set in these gangsta ways. This bike shop help kids design there own type of bike for free and will give you a job if you need one. I know because when i was younger I went to it. My neighborhood couldn't;t fit into to a text or picture. My neighbor hood made me who I am by seeing how lived and making me want better , and the only way you can know my neighborhood if your from it.

I'd agree that the media in general portrays a distorted picture at best. In particular you mentioned the news only focusing on the bad and none of the good. Why do you think positive stories are so unnewsworthy as it were?
ReplyDeletePeople love drama and action, because to me people like being told what is good and bad who is good and who is bad. People here rarely come to Philly but know about the bad parts, there are bad parts ,but thats only a very small part of Philly not Philly as a whole. Even in the bad parts things aren't as bad as it seems. You can't trust the media to inform you on a place where you never been on spent time in.
ReplyDeleteCierra I love how you flipped it around to show how the media could also portray something bad and not show the good about it. My community's seen the same way in the eyes of the media. What are some ways that we could get the media to recognize the good in our communities as opposed to the bad?
ReplyDeleteWe could show them by doing great things within our communities. You don't have to do anything just for show ,but you could do things that make a difference for you ,and people who come after you.
